Food poisoning Makhado Municipality
In a decisive move to protect the community, Makhado Municipality has launched an urgent response after two separate incidents of suspected food poisoning affected learners.
Mayor Cllr Dorcus Mboyi personally visited Elim Hospital on 14 October 2024, where three learners from Denga Secondary School were being treated after reportedly falling ill from snacks purchased at a spaza shop near their school in Ha-Nthabalala. Thanks to timely medical intervention, all three learners recovered quickly and were discharged in stable condition.
In a separate but equally concerning case, 31 learners from Mukhwantheli Secondary School were rushed to Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital after experiencing stomach pains while on the educational trip to Schoemansdal Educational Centre. The cause of the illness was suspected to be the food consumed during the outing.
Mayor Mboyi has voiced her concern over these incidents, emphasising the importance of food safety across the municipality. “We cannot take the health of our learners lightly. I urge all food vendors, including tuckshops and street vendors, to ensure the food they sell is fresh and up to standard. Learners must also be aware of the quality and expiry dates of the products they consume,” said Mboyi.
The mayor’s office has confirmed that Makhado Municipality will intensify efforts to work closely with health authorities to ensure that vendors comply with safety regulations. The municipality remains committed to safeguarding its residents, especially learners, from such incidents in the future.
This proactive response highlights the municipality’s dedication to not only addressing the immediate needs of those affected but also taking preventive steps to avoid similar occurrences.
